Parque Eduardo VII was the chosen stage for the official presentation of “Lisbon European Capital of Sport 2021” (CED), in a ceremony that took place on April 14, and which was attended by several personalities, including Fernando Medina, president of Lisbon City Council, Tiago Brandão, Education Minister, Nuno Delgado, head mission of CED, Nuno Santos, representative of the Association of European Sport Cities - Portugal, and Fernando Santos, the national football coach.
During his speech, Education Minister, congratulated Lisbon, “Today I come here to congratulate Lisbon, for being a European Green Capital, for now being the European Capital of Sport, but also for being the Lisbon of the quality federated sport, for being the Lisbon of inclusive and intergenerational sport, for being the Lisbon organizer of great events, for being the Lisbon that is committed to have great spaces so that we can host great events like this (...)
According to Nuno Delgado, head mission of CED, “Lisbon has as its main objective, in this almost olympic epic, above all, to unite, mobilize and guide our citizens to be more active, healthier and more supportive - whether socially or ecologically - this is our focus”, he says at the beginning of his speech.
For Fernando Medina, mayor of Lisbon, “one of the gifts that sport gives us is the ability to overcome ourselves”. Adding that “sport always calls us to overcome. From a child who wants to learn to ride a bicycle and has the magic of being able to pass this test of balance and mobility, and learning how mobility supports balance, to the recreational athlete who is passing several stages, to the professional of high competition. Overcoming is intrinsic to sport. “
